What are the options for braces?

Straightening teeth has never been easier or quicker than with the new short term cosmetic treatments available to us to improve the appearance of your teeth. If changes are required to the biting teeth then full treatment orthodontics are also available.

When it comes to straightening your smile, South Coast Dental offers a host of different options, so it’s important to know a little bit about each one so you can make an informed decision.

While standard metal braces are still popular, there are Invisalign, ceramic, clear, self-ligating Damon braces and so many other options available today. So, what are they all, and which is right for you?

Invisible Braces

Design

Invisalign is an innovative system which uses a series of clear plastic aligners which are made to fit over your teeth, gradually moving them into their desired position and straightening them. There is no need for brackets, archwires or elastic band. No-one will know you are wearing braces.

Because the aligners are removable, they can be removed for eating, drinking and brushing, making them a hassle-free form of orthodontic treatment. You can also remove them when playing sports or musical instruments, or for those important business meetings and other occasions, such as first dates!

How it works

Each set of aligners, one for the top teeth and one for the bottom, should be worn for approximately two weeks. You will then need to change them. Each new set works to progressively move your teeth into their new position. Every set of aligners is shaped slightly differently according to your bespoke treatment plan, so they build on the work of the previous set. As you replace the aligners your teeth gradually move into their desired position.

Damon Braces

Design

Damon Braces look the same as standard metal braces, but there is one big difference. Self-ligating braces use a special clip to hold the arch wire in place, without the need for elastics. Plus the Damon System is available in clear brackets for those image conscious patients.

Without the elastic ties which attract and collect plaque, Damon braces make dental hygiene easy during treatment. Also, without the need to change elastics, you can potentially visit the orthodontist less frequently.

How it works

While invisible aligners can be effective at straightening some crooked teeth, not everyone is a candidate. When a full mouth orthodontic solution is required we recommend Damon braces. In contrast to invisible braces, the Damon system works 24 hours a day, seven days a week to perfectly align ALL teeth for a phenomenal smile that enhances your entire facial appearance.

Traditional Metal Braces

Design

Traditional braces are more effective at treating extreme overcrowding than other options like clear braces or Invisalign aligners and are less expensive. They give your orthodontist the control they need to move the teeth in small increments at a time. The main disadvantage of traditional braces is the metal mouth appearance.

Avoid chewy foods, like caramels or other soft candies, as well as very hard or crunchy foods that could damage your braces. Brushing and flossing regularly will keep your braces looking good and help you avoid staining to your teeth.

How it works

Traditional metal braces are made up of three key parts: small metal brackets which are bonded to the front surface of your teeth, thin metal archwires which connect these brackets, and small elastic bands (ligatures) which are placed around the brackets. These parts work together to apply gentle pressure to your teeth to move them into position.

LINGUAL Braces

Design

Lingual braces are one of the most discreet treatment options available because the braces are fitted to the back surface of your teeth. Based on the method of traditional metal braces, lingual braces are highly effective at straightening teeth and are an ideal treatment option for adult patients who are self-conscious about having treatment or work in client-facing jobs.

Life with Incognito Brackets is easier than you might think! Like all braces, it may take a little time to get used to them, but most people completely adjust within 2 weeks.

How it works

As well as being our most discreet brace it offers all the benefits and precision of a fixed brace, ensuring you get the best possible results from your treatment. Its low profile brackets also help to make it one of the most comfortable lingual braces around.
